The Spaarne Hospital (or Spaarne Ziekenhuis in Dutch) is a top-clinical regional hospital, with a headquarters in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands. The main location in Hoofddorp hosts almost all medical disciplines. In addition, the hospital has two outpatient clinics in the region, in Heemstede and in Hillegom. The hospital has 455 beds and a staff of 1800 (of which 122 medical specialists), and had 22,500 admissions in 2009.
Care Dynamics conducted an Opportunity Assessment study for the hospital management, to assess the potential of improving patient logistics through the introduction of admission coordination based on tactical planning. The study focused on the potential to realise the highest possible bed-utilisation, while simultaneously avoiding admission-stops and optimising the deployment of nursing-staff across the clinical wards. That in order to facilitate the hospital’s ambitious growth plans for the near future.
As part of the study Care Dynamics, together with a project-team at the hospital, assessed the current planning processes and conducted extensive quantitative analysis of the current admission processes in the clinical and day-care wards. This was then used to perform gap-analysis compared to best-practice tactical planning processes in the healthcare sector, and subsequently to the development of a strategic improvement plan for the hospital based on the implementation of a new tactical planning process for patient logistics. In performing the critical quantitative analysis the project team made extensive use of Care Dynamics’ powerful suit of software applications, including DynamicPlannerTM and its add-on analysis module Admission Data Analyser (ADA).
